The ACT is accepted by nearly every major college and university that accepts the SAT. In fact, many schools will waive the SAT Subject test requirement for ACT test-takers (view list).
Although there are an increasing number of students who take both the ACT & SAT, from our experience, it is better to take practice tests for both exams, and go with the test that best suits your learning style.
A quick ACT/SAT comparison:
- Both tests cover reading, writing and math, but the ACT also includes a science section.
- There is no guessing penalty on the ACT, so students are encouraged to answer every question.
- The ACT allows students to select which scores are submitted to colleges. The College Board will offer this as an option beginning with the March 14, 2009 SAT.

A free full-length practice test is included in the Preparing for the ACT Guide, which is available in most high schools or alternatively can be downloaded here (a PDF).
